VB, Soccer Players of the Week

Men's Soccer:
---Brandon Chagnard, WV Wesleyan, Jr., M, New Orleans, LA/Timothy O'Toole, Davis & Elkins, Fr., GK, Arlington, VA: Chagnard played a role in both Wesleyan scores in a 2-0 victory over Catawba...O'Toole helped Davis & Elkins to a 2-0 week by only allowing a lone goal...He had three saves in a 4-0 blanking of South Atlantic Conference Catawba.

Other nominee: Shepherd's Gregory Khan (2 goals in win over Seton Hill)

Women's Soccer:
---Lindsay Getz, Wheeling Jesuit, Sr., F, Fonthill, ONT/Stephanie Paha, Pitt Johnstown, Fr., GK, Slickville, PA: Getz helped Wheeling Jesuit to a 2-1 week with two goals and four assists...Her pair of goals and assist keyed the Cardinals' important 3-2 regional win over Ashland...Paha posted a pair of shutouts versus Western Pennsylvania rivals Seton Hill and Point Park...The rookie goalkeeper accounted for five saves in the two Lady Cat victories.

Other nominees:  Davis & Elkins' Cole Dant (4 goals, 1 assist in 1-1 week) and Shepherd's Jennifer Corkran (3 goals, 1 assist in 1-1 week).

Volleyball:
---Maria Broslawsky, West Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., MB, Buckhannon, WV:  Broslawsky was a vital part of Wesleyan's 2-1 finish versus Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference squads last week...She compiled 48 kills in three matches and racked up a .386 hitting percentage...The former Buckhannon-Upshur HS standout provided 22 kills in a five-game victory over Kutztown.

Other nominees: Charleston's Katy Skelley (49 kills in 3-2 week), Davis & Elkins' Jennifer Pell (72 kills, .418 hitting % in five matches), Alderson-Broaddus' Jamilyn Decorte (119 assists, 53 digs), Wheeling Jesuit's Jessica Castmore (39 kills in 2-3 week), and Pitt Johnstown's Kristin Irwin (26 kills in three matches).

WVIAC Football Players of the Week (Week #3)

Offensive Player of the Week:
Kevin O'Brien, West Virginia State, QB, Soph., 6-4, 225, Port St. Lucie, FL: O'Brien passed for a pair of touchdowns and rushed for another as the Jackets opened their season with a 37-14 win at Lincoln (MO)...The sophomore completed 16 of 32 passes for 251 yards to lead State to their first non-conference road win since 2002.

Previous winners: 8/25-Dervon Wallace (SU)/Jerry Seymour (GSC); 9/1-Zach Amedro (WLSC).

Defensive Player of the Week:
Darren Banks, West Liberty State, CB, Jr., 5-10, 185, Camden, NJ: Banks swiped four passes in West Liberty State's 45-24 victory at Kentucky Wesleyan...The preseason All-American also accounted for a pair of touchdowns on a 56-yard punt return and a 52-yard interception return...He accounted for 115 return yards on his four interceptions...The junior ranked second nationally in interceptions last season with ten and becomes only the 13th player in WVIAC history to record 20 or more interceptions after his 20th career pickoff on Saturday.

Previous winners: 8/25-Chris Rotella (UC)/Tank Tunstalle (CU); 9/1-Nick Harding (WLSC)/Vince Black (FSU).

Special Teams Player of the Week:
Matt Vujaklya, Fairmont State, DB, Jr., 6-2, 215, East Liverpool, OH: Vujaklya was instrumental in Fairmont State's 21-17 come-from-behind win over North Greenville...His blocked kick of a second quarter field goal attempt allowed the Falcons to stay with 17-0 in a half that they were outgained 380-34...The East Liverpool, OH native owns six career blocked kicks and earns his second career WVIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor...He also chipped in five tackles and three pass breakups from his defensive back spot.

Previous winners: 8/25-Xavier Drakeford (UC); 9/1-Billy Hager (WLSC).

Saturday's Standouts:
Antwarn Jones (SHU) rushed 20 times for 137 yards...Doug Brazill (FSU) rushed for 95 yards and two scores...Josh Culbertson (UC) rushed for 74 yards and two scores...Brandon Truesdale (WVSU) had a pair of interceptions...J.J. Mayer (FSU) made 11 tackles...Rob Ellis (SHU) had 13 tackles, including four for loss...Jacob Lilly (GSC) made ten stops...Antonio Smith (UC) had nine tackles and recovered a fumble...Brian Mitchell (WVSU) rushed 11 times for 108 yards...Wes Sherrill (UC) booted a 22-yard field goal and dropped a pair of punts inside the 20-yard line...Stephen Bumpus (WVSU) returned three punts for 68 yards and picked off a pass...Mark Hartz (SHU) made a dozen stops...Derek Taylor (FSU) hit on 12 of 20 passes for 134 yards...Alex Puente (WVWC) caught three passes for 94 yards...David Parsons (WVSU) caught six passes for 59 yards...Dustin Greenwood (CU) rushed for 148 yards and passed for 174 yards...Mark Stolle (WVSU) made nine tackles...Greg Hopkins (WLSC) returned an interception 53 yards for a score...Eddie Hills (WLSC) rushed for 97 yards and two scores...Will Castelmare (WLSC) averaged 41.5 yards per punt and placed three kicks inside the 20-yard line...Ola Adams (CU) was in on a dozen tackles.

Saturday, 9/8 FB Summaries

West Virginia State 37, Lincoln (MO) 14
(JEFFERSON CITY, MO)---West Virginia State (1-0) opened their season in style with a 37-14 drubbing of Lincoln (0-2).  Kevin O'Brien tossed a pair of touchdown passes and added a scoring rush, while the Jacket defense intercepted five passes.

O'Brien passed for 251 yards and Brian Mitchell rushed 11 times for 108 yards for the Jackets.  Brandon Truesdale picked off two passes to lead the State defense.  WVSU held a 466-212 total offense edge.

Fairmont State 21, North Greenville (SC) 17
(FAIRMONT)---Fairmont State (2-0) pulled off an improbable comeback in the first home game under Mike Lopez as the Falcons rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit against North Greenville (0-2).  Doug Brazill rushed for 95 yards and two second half touchdowns to lead the FSU comeback.

The Falcons were outgained 380-34 in the opening half, but limited North Greenville to 142 yards over the final 30 minutes. Brazill's three-yard touchdown with 2:03 remaining capped the comeback effort.

North Greenville quarterback Eric Moeller passed for 376 yards as his squad held a 522-264 total offense edge.

West Liberty State 45, Kentucky Wesleyan 24
(OWENSBORO, KY)---West Liberty cornerback Darren Banks picked off four passes as West Liberty State (2-0) romped past Kentucky Wesleyan (0-3).  Banks scored on a 52-yard interception return and added a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown.  Greg Hopkins also returned an interception for a score for the Toppers.

Eddie Hills rushed for a pair of scores and 97 yards to lead the West Liberty offense.  The Toppers led 28-10 at the half.

Charleston 17, Elizabeth City State 8
(CHARLESTON---Charleston (2-1) used a strong defensive effort to knock off 2006 NCAA Division II playoff participant Elizabeth City State.  The Golden Eagles held the visitors from North Carolina without an offensive score during the game's first 57 minutes and got a pair of short Josh Culbertson touchdown rushes.

Elizabeth City State pulled with 17-8 on a 65-yard Rayburn Morris to Casey Owens touchdown pass with 2:53 left, but the Golden Eagles ran out the clock thanks to four Culbertson rushes that led to a pair of game-clinching first downs.

Charleston led 3-2 in a low-scoring first half as Wes Sherrill booted a 22-yard field goal for the Golden Eagles.

Walsh 12, Seton Hill 10
(GREENSBURG)---Seton Hill fell in a close contest to NAIA #20 Walsh 12-10 despite Antwarn Jones' 137 rush yards.  Jones' second quarter short touchdown rush gave the Griffins a 7-6 lead, but SHU couldn't cross the goal line again.

Lambros Paxos' pair of field goals accounted for the winning points for Walsh. Clinton Blossomgame had 136 rush yards for the Cavaliers.

Rob Ellis was stellar in defense for Seton Hill with 13 tackles, including four for loss.

Virginia-Wise 35, Concord 28
(ATHENS)---NAIA #18 Virginia-Wise (3-0) got a late Ra'Shad Morgan touchdown rush to nudge Concord (0-2) in an entertaining contest.  Concord quarterback Dustin Greenwood rushed for 148 yards and passed for 174, but was plagued by four interceptions.

Travis Harris rushed for 91 yards and a pair of scores for the Mountain Lions.  CU held a 435-356 edge in total offense.

Morgan gained 110 yards on 24 carries to lead U.Va.-Wise.  Quarterback Randy Hippeard hit on 20 of 31 passes for 237 yards for the Cavaliers.

Elon 59, West Virginia Wesleyan 16
(ELON, NC)---West Virginia Wesleyan (1-1) stayed close for a half, but Southern Conference member Elon scored four third quarter touchdowns to pull away in a 59-16 victory.  The Bobcats were tied 7-7 early in the second quarter following a Harry Lorusso touchdown rush.  Elon pushed the lead to 17-7 at the half.

Scott Riddle passed for 362 and three touchdowns for the homestanding Phoenix.  Terrell Hudgins caught eight of those passes for 142 yards, including a score.

Alex Puente had 94 yards on three catches for Wesleyan, including a 60-yard touchdown reception on a halfback pass from Greg Duncan.

Tiffin 34, Glenville State 14
(TIFFIN, OH)---Matt Root tossed three touchdown passes to lead Tiffin (3-0) past Glenville State (1-2).  The Dragons outgained GSC 258-36 through the air to remain unbeaten on the season.

Glenville State received 61 rush yards from Jerry Seymour. Pioneer quarterbacks completed 10 of 17 passes, but only for 36 yards and with two interceptions.  Dwayne Thompson and Jared Dearing each scored on one-yard touchdown plunges for the Pioneers.

Other nominees: Pitt Johnstown's Chris Hawkins (3 goals in 7-0 win over Pitt Greensburg), Ohio Valley's Nick Pecarski (2 goals in win over Ferrum), and Shepherd's Gregory Khan (3 goals in 5-1 win over Millersville).

Women's Soccer:
---Sarah Coehlo, Concord, Jr., GK, Catlett, VA: Coehlo recorded nine saves in Concord's 1-0 double-overtime league win against Shepherd.

Other nominees: Pitt Johnstown's Alicia Zack (3 goals, 1 assist in 10-0 win over Salem International) and Shepherd's Amy Bell (22 saves in 1-0 double-overtime loss to Concord).

Volleyball:
---Becca LaBrake, Charleston, Sr., OH, Clifton, VA:  LaBrake helped Charleston to a 2-2 mark at the Carson-Newman Invitational with 36 kills, 30 digs, and 15 blocks...The Golden Eagles picked up wins over North Greenville and Kentucky Wesleyan, but dropped matches to Lander and Tusculum.

Other nominees: Alderson-Broaddus' Sarah Neikirk (45 kills in four matches at C-N Invitational), Shepherd's Julie Robertson (all-tournament team at Wilmington Invitational), and Pitt Johnstown's Kristin Irwin (26 kills in 1-3 week).
